Frequently Asked Questions

How long has Vicsoccer been around?

The Amateur Soccer Federation of Victoria was founded in 1971 (that's 35 years ago) and has grown steadily from that time.   We are an Incorporated Association governed by the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 in Victoria, Australia.  We currently operate under the registered trading name of Vicsoccer.

What sort of clubs do you cater for?

Federation clubs come from a variety of backgrounds.   Our original clubs in 1971 were mainly from factories and industry.   The league in those days was known as the Industrial and Amateur Soccer League of Victoria, but over the years we have grown and expanded, and now cater for clubs from a variety of origins.      Some are regionally based, while some represent educational institutions or corporations.   Some clubs provide for ex-players of the state’s professional clubs, and yet others represent the various emergency and defence services.    The greatest growth in clubs has come from ethnic social clubs - we have a rich variety of cultures and nationalities represented within our clubs.   The Federation welcomes and encourages clubs from all nations and cultural backgrounds to participate in our competitions.   There is no discrimination based on race, religious beliefs or any other factor.

Vicsoccer caters for clubs with any number of teams.  Most clubs have either one, two or three teams.      Clubs can elect to play in either morning or afternoon leagues. Currently, all matches are played on Sundays, although Saturday leagues would be organized given suitable demand.   The morning and afternoon leagues are organized into divisions, with a standard promotion and relegation system operating between divisions at the end of each season.

In addition to our league matches, which are organized on a home-and-away basis, Vicsoccer runs a variety of cup competitions, both pre-season and during the course of the year.

What about referees ?

All Vicsoccer matches are covered by neutral, qualified referees.   We have developed our own infrastructure for training and qualifying referees as well as being responsible for their on-going education, fitness training and general welfare matters.

Do we need to buy special brands of uniforms?

No.  Absolutely not.   You are free to wear whatever brand of shirts suits you needs and budget.  We will never tell you what brand you must buy.   That's a guarantee.

What about match balls?

Same thing.   Any brand ball is acceptable.  We will never tell you what brand of ball you must buy.  Again, that's a guarantee.

What about costs?

A table of fees and charges is available for download at the bottom of this page.   We are generally between 25% and 50% of the costs of playing elsewhere.

What about insurance?

Vicsoccer runs a compulsory Public Liability insurance scheme.   It allows our clubs to purchase liability insurance much cheaper than they would be able to get elsewhere.   And it takes all the hassle out of trying to organize your own.   In 2007 the cost was $395 per team.  That covered $10million of public liability and $1million Professional Indemnity.

Loss of income and medical insurance are not compulsory, but are available as an option.
